Martin ”Marty” Setter, 84, of Bristol, husband of Roberta (Gleason) Setter, passed away suddenly on April 2, 2019 at Bristol Hospital. Born on February 27, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Peter and Elizabeth (O’Connor) Setter. Marty was a peacetime veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. He attended UCONN and had played for the UCONN men’s basketball team as a point guard in 1964. He earned a teaching degree as well as his CPA certification. After college, he taught business, accounting, and typing at Bristol Eastern High School for 25 years. While at Eastern, he became the Business Department head for some time as well as a baseball coach and basketball coach for the school’s teams. After his 25 years at Eastern, he continued his teaching at Bristol Central High School for several more years before his retirement. During the 1970’s, Marty also taught accounting at Tunxis Community College. Marty, and his wife Roberta, loved to travel. They visited many states in the U.S. and many foreign countries. When he wasn’t traveling, he enjoyed playing many friendly tennis matches at Bristol’s Copper Ledge Tennis Courts. Besides his wife, Marty leaves two daughters and one son-in-law Kristin E. Sirois of Tampa, FL, and Kimberly E. and Eugene Guptill of Harrison, ME; his sister Catherine Schmidt of Manchester, CT; a brother-in-law Steven R. Gleason and his wife Linda K. Gleason of Boise, ID; three grandchildren Jesse M. Braddock, Ryan M. Guptill, and Devon C. Guptill and four nieces Diane Schmidt, Kelly Sage, Erin Gleason, and Elizabeth Schmidt. Marty was predeceased by his brother Peter Setter. A memorial service will be held Friday evening, April 5, at 6:30pm at DuPont Funeral Home, 25 Bellevue Ave., Bristol. Calling hours will also be Friday evening from 5-6:30pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
