Laponte, Louis J., 97, of Bristol, husband of Margaret (Ashman) Laponte died Saturday, December 05, 2009 at Bristol Hospital. He was born in Bristol December 10, 1911 and was a son of the late Luigi and Laura (Savino) Laponte. He was a shipping agent at the former New Departure in Bristol, retiring in 1969. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, serving as a chief radioman on the destroyers, the USS Quick, USS Stevenson and the USS Crouter. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony Church. He was a member of the BPOE #1010, the West End Athletic Club and had played semi professional baseball and basketball for the Industrial League in Bristol before and after WWII. He was an avid New York Yankee Fan. Besides his wife, he leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Joyce Laponte of Fairfield, CT, a daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Steven Danis of Richmond, VA, five grandchildren, William Trible, Louis Hoskins Trible, Andrew Trible, Matthew Laponte and Jennifer Laponte; a nephew Brian LaPonte and a niece Laurene Tata. He was predeceased by three brothers, Frank and Peter and Charlie LaPonte and three sisters, Rose Basso, Lucy DePaolo and Angelina LaPonte. The funeral will be held Wednesday 9am from DuPont Funeral Home, 25 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, followed by a mass at 10am in St. Anthony Church. Military honors will be accorded at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony Church, 111 School, St., Bristol, CT 06010.
